Adequate calcium and vitamin D throughout life, as part of a well-balanced diet, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Osteo-K® provides additional nutritional support by combining calcium and vitamin D3 with MK4^®.

To meet the people's unique nutritional needs, NBI created three versions of Osteo-K: original Osteo-K for those who need more calcium, Osteo-K Minis with less calcium, and calcium-free Osteo-MK4^®. 

In addition to providing 1000 mg/day of calcium (as calcium citrate) and vitamin 2000 IU/day of vitamin D3, Osteo-K also delivers 45 mg/day of MK4.

Clinical Trials: More than 25 clinical trials involving over 7000 people show that MK4 (45 mg/day in divided doses) maintains strong bones. One meta-analysis of clinical trials concluded that MK4 (45 mg daily) maintains strong bones, as indicated by 70% fewer fractures in clinical trial volunteers (Cockayne S et al. 2006;166(12):1256-1261).

Another review of the data that evaluated 19 randomized, controlled clinical trials involving 6,759 volunteers reached the same conclusion--MK4 (45 mg/day in divided doses) maintains strong bones as indicated by reducing fractures in clinical trials (Huang ZB et al. 2015;26(3):1175-1186).

A more recent systematic review and meta-analysis published in 2022 confirmed the earlier research. This study pooled data from 10 randomized, controlled clinical trials with 5,413 women ages 45-81. The data showed that MK4 promotes maintaining strong bones, as indicated by 62% fewer fractures in volunteers (Ma ML et al. 2022;10:979649).

Studies show that combining MK4 with vitamin D3 provides greater benefits than taking MK4 alone. A two-year clinical trial with 172 women (average age 53 years old) divided the volunteers into four groups. They took MK4 (45 mg/day) alone, vitamin D3 alone, or a combination of MK4 plus vitamin D3. The fourth group acted as a control and only received some dietary counseling. All women had low bone mineral density at the beginning of the study. 

Not only did bone mineral density significantly increase more in the MK4+D3 group compared to the other groups, but this improvement was already evident after just six months of taking the nutrients. After two years, 67.8% of the volunteers taking MK4+D3 had their bone density increase by 2% or more, while 45.2% had a 5% or greater increase in bone density (Ushiroyama T, et al. 2002;41(3):211-221.)

Another two-year randomized clinical trial divided 92 women (mean age about 64) into four groups. The women took MK4 (45 mg/day) alone, vitamin D3 alone, the combination of MK4 (45 mg/day) plus vitamin D3, or only calcium (as calcium lactate, 2 grams/day). The best results were noted in the volunteers who took MK4 plus D3. In this group, bone density increased 1.49% during the first year and 1.35% after two years. (Iwamoto J, et al. 2000;5(6):546-51.)

A third clinical trial showed MK4 was the key additional nutrient. The study lasted six months and gave 78 women ages 61 to 74 either MK4 (45 mg/day), vitamin D3 and calcium, or only vitamin D3 and calcium. Bone density only increased in those taking the MK4. (Je SH, et al. 2011;26(8):1093-8.)

Safety: Clinical trials published in medical journals document over 7,000 people taking 45 mg daily (and higher doses) of MK4 for up to eight years without any serious side effects.

CAUTION: People taking the anticoagulant medication warfarin (Coumadin) should not take this product since vitamin K interferes with this medication.
